How the association began and how it has moved on

The association was not founded by people who picked the subject from behind a desk. It came about because one of them was sexually abused as a child and, years later, found that there was practically nowhere to talk about it publicly.

Why we changed our name

The original name referred to the book and to the place where the story took place. It reflected what we did at the beginning: we gave space to people to whom something had happened. Over time, however, it became clear that we wanted to shift the focus of our work to children to whom nothing has happened yet.

The new name points to what we are trying to pass on to children: a real friend is someone who never asks you to keep secrets. The manipulation that comes before abuse often involves an agreement that “this will stay our secret”. A child who can recognise that kind of sentence is one step ahead. But responsibility always lies with the adult who crosses the line, never with the child.

The change of name does not change the legal entity. The company ID (IČO), the court file number and the bank account all remain the same. Older materials, the book and some documents therefore still carry the original name, Klubovna Naděje.

How we are funded

We have no regular grant or institutional funding. Our running costs are covered by donations from individuals, public fundraising appeals, regular support on the Herohero platform, sales of the book and some of the school talks that schools pay for themselves. We subsidise talks from donations for schools that have no budget for them.

Much of the work is done by members of the team in their free time. Donations mainly pay for equipment and editing, consultations with experts, printing materials and travel costs for school talks.

Five principles we stick to

• Safety first. We never publish a story without consent and professional oversight. We consult psychologists on sensitive subjects.
• We ask rather than lecture. Prevention by children for children works better than warnings from adults.
• We talk in concrete terms. Instead of abstract concepts, we use situations that children know from their own lives.
• We don’t stop at awareness. Everything we produce should lead to action: confiding in someone, seeking help, setting a boundary.
• Openness about money. Anyone who supports us has the right to know where the money goes.
