#odvážný

When someone speaks about it out loud, it stops being taboo. We give a voice to people who have been through trauma, and space to experts who explain what happened and why. The show’s name means “#brave”; all episodes are in Czech.

About the show

What the show is about and why we started it

#odvážný is a show about the things that get skipped over in everyday conversation. It brings together people who have lived through sexual violence, domestic violence, addiction, the loss of someone close, serious illness or a period when they didn’t want to live. And alongside them, experts who explain what goes on in a person’s mind in such a situation, what the law says, and where the point lies beyond which a person can no longer cope alone.

It grew out of a practical need. When we began to open up the subject of abuse, it turned out that what people lacked was not information but an example. General awareness-raising can be brushed off in a single sentence. A real person talking about what they went through cannot. The messages we receive say the same thing again and again: what made the difference was a sentence from an episode in which the listener recognised themselves, not a statistic or a leaflet.

The show is free for viewers, with no paywall. That is deliberate: information about prevention should be available even to those who have no means to pay. We fund it from donations and from the regular support of our listeners.

Recurring themes on the show

  • Sexual violence and abuse in childhood, including within the family.
  • Domestic violence, manipulation and emotional blackmail in relationships and families.
  • Trauma and its consequences in adulthood: anxiety, sleep problems, difficulties in close relationships.
  • Addiction and the way out of it, including what came before it.
  • Serious illness, the loss of someone close, and the life that goes on afterwards.
  • How the system works: what the police, social services and the courts do, and where things get stuck in practice.
  • Prevention: what exactly to do at home and at school so that it never happens in the first place.

How an episode is made

1

A phone call first

We talk to the guest on the phone before anything is filmed. We go through what they want to talk about and what they don’t, and explain what filming involves.

2

Filming without pressure

We never push anyone to finish saying something they don’t want to. A pause in the middle of an interview is normal, not a failure.

3

Expert consultation

We go through sensitive passages with experts. We consider whether the result will help, or whether it could harm someone.

4

Guest approval

The guest has the final say. If they change their mind, we cut the passage or don’t publish the episode. After publication, we will take it down from our channels on request; we cannot control copies that someone may have made in the meantime.

Before you watch your first episode

The interviews touch on difficult subjects and are not designed as background entertainment. If you are going through something similar yourself, take a break whenever you need to. If an episode affects you more than you expected, that isn’t weakness but a normal reaction. You will find verified contacts for help on the Get help page.

Who sits on the other side of the table

Presenters and expert team

The interviews are led by people who know the subject at first hand: some from their own experience, others as psychologists and therapists. We consult on sensitive topics under professional supervision.
